About Us

Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) is dedicated to advancing the highest ethical standards in the conduct of research.

Since 1974, PRIM&R has served the full array of individuals and organizations involved in biomedical, social science, behavioral, and educational research. PRIM&R’s vibrant membership community, which numbers more than 3,600 individuals, includes professionals working with human subject protections, animal care and use, institutional biosafety programs, RECs, and ESCROs.  Our members are HRPP/IACUC/IBC/REC/ESCRO administrators, researchers, research staff, institutional officials, government representatives, subject advocates, ethicists, policy makers, pharmaceutical and biotechnology personnel, and attorneys.

Via a wide variety of conferences and courses, PRIM&R provides balanced, well-researched, and accurate information on the range of ethical and regulatory issues affecting research while also offering unparalleled access to certification, networking, and professional development resources.

Education
PRIM&R's conferences serve as an open and independent forum in which stakeholders–those representing research institutions, hospitals, universities, the federal government, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and advocacy groups–come together to consider key issues related to human and animal subjects research.

Our conferences address the latest ethical, regulatory, and policy-related developments in biomedical, social science, behavioral, and educational research as well as in animal care and use. Speakers and presenters are leaders in the fields of research, bioethics, and science policy. Conference participants hail from North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe.

In addition to conferences, PRIM&R offers highly acclaimed At Your Doorstep on-site education/training programs, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) 101sm, IRB Administrator 101, and more. PRIM&R offers these programs at institutions throughout the United States and overseas, as well as in conjunction with our national conferences.

Membership
PRIM&R is the professional home for those whose responsibilities include the protection and welfare of human and animal subjects. PRIM&R strives to enhance the ethical and responsible conduct of research through the educational and professional development of its members. Members include professionals from around the world responsible for overseeing the use of human and animal research subjects, including administrators, government officials, and academic department chairs, as well as members of institutional review boards, human research protection programs, animal care and use committees, and institutional biosafety committees.

Certification
In keeping with its commitment to advancing the highest standards of ethical research, PRIM&R proudly sponsors two certification initiatives; the Certification for IRB Professionals (CIP®), for individuals working with institutional review boards and human research protection programs, and the Certification for Professional IACUC Administrators (CPIA), for those working with animal care and use committees. These credentials strengthen each profession by providing established bodies of relevant knowledge and standards of practice, and by providing potential career advancement opportunities.

Resources
PRIM&R offers publications, CD-ROMs, and other educational resources that are invaluable to any organization's research protections program.

PRIM&R is committed to building a strong and diverse community of individuals and institutions concerned with advancing the highest standards in the conduct of research. We do our best to serve as a source for information and links to the broader community. Where practical, we will answer questions, provide references and referrals, and distribute relevant and current articles and educational materials. While not a lobbying organization, PRIM&R issues public policy statements and can provide information for testimony before legislative committees and other forums.
