"[Preparing for the certification exam] is like a breath of fresh air.  You learn why it is we do what we do.  Having knowledge of the regulations that support your daily decisions is really empowering.  This is a tough job, and feeling confident that you are making good decisions reduces some of the pressure." —Kim Davis, CIP

What’s New for 2013

The Council for Certification of IRB Professionals (CCIP) is pleased to announce some program changes that we hope will encourage you to pursue and maintain your CIP® certification.

Beginning January 1, 2013, you will find these revised policies in the Applicant Handbook for 2013 and in the Recertification Guidelines.

  • Revised eligibility requirements  state that “this certification program is for individuals whose primary job responsibilities include substantial participation in overseeing, administering or performing the daily activities of an institutional review board (IRB) as part of a human research protection (HRP) program.” You may find additional information regarding eligibility here.
  • Recertification by continuing education (CE) continues to require documentation of at least 30 hours of education that is within the CIP Content Outline and beyond initial or basic training. Of these 30 hours, 15 must carry credits issued by a recognized accrediting body. Sessions from the main conference of the AAHRPP annual conference will also be accepted towards fulfillment of the 15 hours required to carry CE credits issued by a recognized accrediting body regardless of whether those credits have actually been issued. Pre-conference sessions and other AAHRPP CE events are NOT included, although they may still be eligible for non-accredited CE credit hours for CIP recertification purposes. As with other CE events, the topics must be within the CIP Body of Knowledge (Content Outline) and the content must be beyond basic initial education.
