Target Audience

The target audience of this activity included IRB members, administrators, investigators, institutional officials, regulators, compliance officers, those charged with overseeing "responsible conduct of research" programs, hospital/university attorneys, patient advocates, representatives of voluntary health organizations, industry and biotechnology representatives, and those in science policy.

Educational Needs Assessment

The primary goal of this program was to ensure that those working in human research protections programs have access to current and accurate information on laws, regulations, policies and guidance documents governing research ethics and research compliance. This program recognized that those working in human research protections programs need access to current and accurate information on the ethical principles underlying the conduct of research with human subjects and have an opportunity to discuss these principles. This educational activity also addressed the need for the target audience to have access to current and accurate information on best practices and other creative strategies that institutions around the country are employing to maximize protection of research participants, while at the same time streamlining administrative procedures to the best of their abilities.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants were able to:

  • Develop strategies for managing successful human research protection programs;
  • Participate in a user-friendly learning environment that offers a multitude of educational opportunities crucial to enhancing the skills of those conducting research or administering, serving on, or chairing Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), as well as those involved with Human Research Protection Programs (HRPPs); and
  • Define cutting-edge information and skills in order to reach professional excellence.

Certificates of Attendance

Certificates of Attendance for the 2008 Advancing Ethical Research Conference were distributed during the conference. Such certificates are useful for obtaining Continuing Education Credits (not Continuing Medical Education Credit) from professional associations. Note that guidelines around Continuing Education Credits may differ, and you should consult the appropriate professional association representative for further guidance.

If you would like to receive a Certificate of Attendance for a previous PRIM&R conference, please contact us with the following information:

  • Full name
  • E-mail address
  • Conference name and date(s)
  • Dates and hours of attendance

Certificates will be delivered via e-mail approximately three weeks after receipt of request.

Community/Non-Affiliated Member Certificate of Competency

PRIM&R recognizes the importance of community/non-affiliated members to the Institutional Review Board.  These vital members represent the patient/subjects and act as the voice of those without whom research could not advance.  In an effort to recognize their significant contributions, PRIM&R will offer a Certificate of Competency to community/non-affiliated IRB members to those who fulfill certain requirements during the conference.  Learn more.
