Overview
We encourage you to consider participating in the Annual Poster Presentation at PRIM&R’s 2010 Advancing Ethical Research Conference!
The development and presentation of Scientific or Programmatic Posters promotes interdisciplinary sharing and collaboration, and facilitates the exchange of ideas, information, and practical strategies for managing the many challenges faced by human research protection program (HRPP) professionals. Last year, over 120 posters were displayed, four of which were selected for the Panel Session, and 16 of which were selected for Moderated Discussions.
Interested in submitting an abstract for poster presentation? Posters may be based upon either new program initiatives or empirical research, and fit into one of two categories:
Programmatic Abstracts describe novel or innovative approaches to the management, function, and operations of institutional review boards (IRBs) and human research protection programs (HRPPs). If you have created and implemented a successful new program or procedure this year, please consider sharing it with your colleagues.
Scientific Abstracts address empirical studies related to research ethics. PRIM&R conference attendees are hungry for cutting edge research results that can improve the IRB/HRPP’s functioning at their respective institutions, so please "strut your stuff" and be part of our vibrant marketplace of ideas and information.
Please note that it is permissible to submit an abstract, and present a poster, drawn from previously published materials.

Guidelines for Submission
Your abstract for the poster should describe your project in sufficient detail as to allow reviewers and readers to understand what you did and what you learned. For examples of content and format, please look through abstracts submitted to prior conferences.

Programmatic - A statement of the problem or issue the program is intended to address, including a definition of the intended outcome
- A thorough description of the program
- Details on how the program was evaluated
- Suggestions for future program usage at your home institution
- Suggestions for implementation at other sites
- Any other relevant information

Before you submit your abstract online, please read through the following guidelines.
The deadline to submit an abstract is June 11, 2010.
If an abstract is accepted, one author or co-author must attend the 2010 Advancing Ethical Research Conference to present the poster.
Unfortunately, PRIM&R is unable to waive conference registration fees or pay travel expenses for poster presenters. In addition, the presenter must organize and pay for all shipping arrangements for his or her poster materials.
Accepted abstracts will be featured on PRIM&R’s website, and may be used for other promotional purposes. Abstract authors acknowledge that PRIM&R bears no further obligation to obtain permission for the purposes indicated, and grant this release voluntarily and with no compensation or inducement.
Important Dates - January 8, 2010 - Abstract submission process begins.
- June 11, 2010 – Abstract submission deadline; all abstracts must be received by 5:00 PM ET.
- July 30, 2010 – Decisions sent via e-mail to submitting authors.
- August 13, 2010 – Deadline for poster presenters to confirm participation.
- December 6-8, 2010 – The 2010 Advancing Ethical Research Conference will be held in San Diego, CA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the purpose of the Advancing Ethical Research Poster Presentation?
A: To promote interdisciplinary sharing and collaboration, and to facilitate the exchange of ideas, information, and practical strategies for managing the many challenges faced by human research protection program (HRPP) professionals.
Q: Do I need to be a PRIM&R member to submit an abstract?
A: No. However, please contact Joanna Cardinal if you are interested in learning the benefits of becoming a PRIM&R member.
Q: What is a poster?
A: A poster is a visual presentation that combines text and graphics that illustrates the processes, flow and results of your project/research. A poster should clearly articulate what you did, how you did it, why you did it, and how the project contributes to the field of advancing ethical research.
Q: How do I enter?
A: Review the guidelines for abstracts and then submit the required information on the online submission form. Your abstract will undergo review by the Poster Abstract Sub-Committee. We will notify you of your standing in the poster presentation by August 14. (See important dates to remember.)
Q: May I enter more than one abstract?
A: Yes, you may! You must submit a form for each abstract as it will be reviewed independently.
Q: Who reviews and selects the abstracts?
A: The Poster Abstract Sub-Committee reviews all abstracts.
Q: Are there opportunities to present the poster in an oral presentation?
A: The Poster Abstract Sub-Committee will select up to four abstract authors to present their work during a Poster Panel Session, a 75-minute panel discussion. The committee will select up to 16 abstract authors to present their work during informal, moderated discussions that take place during the conference’s evening reception.
Q: Where can I view abstracts presented at previous conferences?
A: You can view abstracts submitted to prior conferences on our website.
Q: Are there any resources to help me prepare my poster?
A: The poster display board will be 4’ x 6’, with an approximately 1” metal border. The background color will be gray, or a similarly neutral color cloth. It is important to keep the poster simple: clear, concise, and organized. The text should be legible from a few feet away. The top “banner” should include the title, authors, and affiliations. Please refer to the figures below for examples of how a classic, original research poster is organized.
The Science and Engineering Library at the State University of New York Buffalo provides an extensive list of helpful tips and resources for preparing your poster. We will distribute final poster guidelines to accepted abstract authors.
Q: When will I know if my abstract has been accepted?
A: Notifications will be e-mailed to the designated contact person for the abstract by Friday, August 28.
Q: What should I bring to the conference?
A: Your poster! We’ll provide pushpins so that you can attach your poster to the display board. Some presenters find it easier to make a one piece poster; others print each section by using Power Point and a professional printer. If you want to have a certain background color, feel free to bring an appropriately sized drape.
