This two-day conference included a range of keynote addresses, panels, workshops, and didactic sessions, all of which were designed to help build and strengthen effective human subjects protections programs applicable to social, behavioral, and educational (SBE) research.

Pre-Conference Educational Programs: Tuesday, April 26 – Wednesday, April 27, 2011

IRB Administrator 101 IRB 101sm SBER

This one-and-a-half day program was specifically
geared toward borth new administrators and
those in need of a "refresher" course. The
curriculum for IRB Administrator 101 included
the identification of the key components of human
research protections programs, an examination of
the primary responsibilities of administrators,
and a review of strategies and policies for developing
and/or strengthening an institution's human research
protections programs.

This one day program reviewed the fundementals of
IRBs with a focus on their development, the underlying
ethical principles, procedures for reviewing research,
and the key regulations that govern IRBs. Special
emphasis was given to the operations of IRBs in
social, behavioral, and educational research settings.

2011 Social, Behavioral, & Educational Research Conference: Thursday, April 28 – Friday, April 29, 2011

Attendees learned about ethical issues related to the exploding field of internet-based research, and best practices for the review and monitoring of SBE research. Faculty explored strategies for better understanding how to assess risk, how to optimize the flexibility inherent in the federal regulations, and for generally building stronger alliances among investigators, institutional review board (IRBs), and institutional officials during the conference.
