IRB 101sm  Biomedical Research (Next Offering: December 2010)
This course covers the ethics, history, and federal regulations related to the conduct of biomedical research on human subjects. Through a series of lectures, interactive discussions, and case studies, attendees will learn:

  • How the federally mandated IRB system developed within the United States;
  • The underlying ethical principles and procedures for reviewing research involving human subjects; and
  • The key components of the regulations that govern IRB operations and research activities.

IRB 101sm – Social, Behavioral, and Educational Research (SBER) (Next Offering: December 2010) 
This course covers the ethics, history, and federal regulations related to the conduct of social, behavioral, and educational research (SBER) on human subjects. Through a series of lectures, interactive discussions, and case studies, attendees will learn:

  • How the federally mandated IRB system developed within the United States;
  • The underlying ethical principles and procedures for reviewing research involving human subjects; and
  • The key components of the regulations that govern IRB operations and research activities.

IRB 201 (Next Offering: May 2010) 
IRB 201 provides participants with the knowledge needed to become experienced IRB chairs, members, and staff. This educational program includes information directly relevant to IRB chairs, members, and staff who conduct reviews as part of a convened IRB or through the expedited procedure. This course has been designed for IRB members and staff who understand the fundamentals of IRB operations and who are now interested in obtaining the next level of training. By attending IRB 201, participants gain the knowledge and skills needed both to serve as effective IRB reviewers and to teach others to become effective IRB reviewers. Note that this course does not cover administrative issues.

IRB Administrator 101 (Next Offering: May 2010)
IRB Administrator 101 is a one and a half day program, specifically geared toward both new administrators and those in need of a “refresher” course. Taught by highly experienced administrators in the field, the curriculum for IRB Administrator 101 includes:

  • The identification of the key components of human research protections programs;
  • An examination of the primary responsibilities of administrators; and
  • A review of strategies and policies for developing and/or strengthening your institution’s human research protections program.

Investigator 101
Based on the successful IRB 101sm program, this training for investigators reviews the history and ethics of human subjects research. Investigator 101 also covers the top ten responsibilities of investigators in convenient modules. This program allows institutions to train research staff and investigators easily and effectively. Faculty members for this course include teachers, writers, and leaders in the fields of ethics and the regulation of research. Investigator 101 is offered as a CD-ROM training resource.
