Overview
On September 30-October 3, 2013, PRIM&R offered four educational programs: Collaborating for Compliance, Institutional Review Board (IRB) 101sm, Essentials of IACUC Administration, and IRB Administrator 101. These programs were co-hosted by The City University of New York (CUNY). The program took place at the CUNY Graduate Center.
Collaborating for Compliance: The Role of the Research Team, the IRB, & the Institution

Research compliance is an institution-wide undertaking. From investigators and research coordinators to institutional review board members and staff to institutional officials—all members of an institution’s human research protections program (HRPP) are key to ensuring high quality, ethical clinical trials. This full-day program provided participants with the tools they need to be effective members of their HRPP by highlighting best practices and common compliance pitfalls. The course was designed for all members of an institution’s HRPP but places special emphasis on addressing the role and function of researchers and research staff in relation to the institutional review board.

IRB 101sm
Tuesday, October 1, 2013: 8:00 AM-4:00 PM
IRB 101sm was a full-day program that will provide attendees with the fundamentals they need to do their jobs more ethically, more energetically, more effectively, and more efficiently. It was a great “nuts-and-bolts” introduction for newcomers to the field, and a terrific refresher course for those who are more seasoned. Through a series of lectures, interactive discussions, and case studies, IRB 101sm covered the ethics, history, and federal regulations related to the conduct research involving human subjects.

Essentials of IACUC Administration

Essentials of IACUC Administration
was a 1.5-day course that provides IACUC administrators and support
staff, as well as training and compliance personnel, with an overview of
how to effectively manage an animal care and use program. This course reviewed the key components of an integrated program, examined the
primary responsibilities of administrators, and discussed strategies for
creating and maintaining a culture of compliance that assures the humane
care and use of animals while facilitating their use in research and
teaching.
Attendees acquired strategies
designed to ensure that IACUC administrators and their staff provide, on
a regular basis, the institutional support necessary to develop and
continually strengthen both the IACUC and the broader animal care and
use program of which it is a part.

IRB Administrator 101

Thursday, October 3, 2013: 8:30 AM-4:00 PM
IRB Administrator 101 was a one and a half day program, specifically geared toward new administrators, those in need of a “refresher” course, and anyone interested in learning more about IRB operations. The curriculum for IRB Administrator 101 included the identification of the key components of human research protection programs (HRPPs), an examination of the primary responsibilities of administrators, and a review of strategies and policies for developing and/or strengthening an institution’s HRPP.
