Data-Driven Research: Ethical and Practical Considerations for IRBs

    • Speakers: Elizabeth Buchanan and Mary Gray

This PRIM&R Preconference program will focus on data-driven research and the ethical and regulatory challenges that accompany oversight in this emerging landscape. More data are created today than ever before in history; and data sources are diverse and plentiful, as data are generated in both research and non-research spaces. Data sets are compiled, bought, and sold, often with no consideration for the original context or use, and little regulation. These mixed and mined data sets contribute to the complexity of using data in research in ethically and methodologically appropriate ways, and IRBs are regularly being asked to provide oversight of research that involves social media, big data, artificial intelligence, and other forms of data-intensive protocols.

This workshop will introduce participants to the main forms of data-driven research, and will include an overview of internet research, research using social media, big data, and the interconnections with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and research ethics. We will use case studies and examples to increase understanding of emerging data spaces and data-intensive research, and discuss best practices and guidelines for IRBs and researchers.
