Overview

Since post-approval monitoring (PAM) validates that research is being carried out in the manner that was originally approved by the IACUC, many institutions employ PAM as a self-auditing mechanism to check on compliance. A well-run PAM program, however, can also lead to improved animal welfare, science, and collaboration among departments in the animal care and use program. During this webinar, speakers will provide operational strategies for conducting PAM within a framework where PAM benefits institutional culture and program performance as a whole. Topics of discussion will include:

  • History, function, purpose, and evolution of PAM
  • Different models for structuring a PAM program, and tailoring these models to your institution’s needs
  • Strategies and resources for conducting PAM
  • PAM as an opportunity to promote education, transparency, and communication between researchers and the institution, and suggestions for how PAM staff contribute to this effort
  • Potential solutions to common challenges encountered in PAM

Speaker

David CannonDavid Cannon, CPIA currently works at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as the director for the IACUC office. His position entails the daily management of office operations as well as long-range planning in a collaborative institutional environment. Mr. Cannon was previously employed at Vanderbilt University, where he was instrumental in the development of the office of animal welfare assurance and the implementation of a post-approval monitoring program supporting three auditors. He was also employed at Wake Forest University as a research manager for the department of physiology and pharmacology, where he spent ten years managing a large behavioral pharmacology laboratory. Continuing at Wake Forest University, he accepted a position in the office of research, where he developed the first program of post-approval compliance monitoring as the university’s first compliance officer. As a research associate at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Mr. Cannon conducted selection testing from mass screening in human subjects and lead a project that investigated the effect of closed head injury on affected cognitive memory loss. Mr. Cannon holds a BA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has done graduate work at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine and Wake Forest University. He is also a Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA), served as a CPIA council member, past co-chair of the PRIM&R membership committee, and is a member of the National Honor Society in Psychology.

Sandy_WilkinsSandy Wilkins LVT, CPIA, RLATG has been with Michigan State University (MSU) since 2000. She graduated from the MSU Veterinary Technology Program in 1994. In 2000 she began her career with MSU where her skills were utilized as technical support for clinical and biomedical research. In 2006 she joined the Office of Regulatory Affairs as the IACUC research liaison and developed the post-approval monitoring program at MSU. She is a member of the IACUC at MSU, a member of Michigan AALAS, and a Licensed Veterinary Technician with the state of Michigan.
