SBER Network Virtual Roundtable: Piloting a System-Based Exemption Process
September 20, 2019 | 2-3 PM ET

Presenter: Cynthia S. Shindledecker, CIP, University of Michigan’s Health Sciences and Behavioral Sciences IRB Director

Because the implementation of the revised Common Rule required changes to the University of Michigan’s smart-form IRB application, the IRBs took the opportunity to pilot a process that permits an investigator to generate an exemption determination letter based upon responses to qualifying questions without submitting to the IRB. The presentation will include a demonstration of the system, a discussion of the kinds of projects that still require IRB review for exemption, project metrics, and a summary of what we have learned from our validation of these system-generated determinations.
