Whether it's managing multiple protocol reviews or developing policies and procedures, IRB administrators are presented with numerous challenges. PRIM&R's IRB Administrator 101 provided an overview of the information IRB administrators need to know in order to successfully perform their responsibilities. This one and a half day workshop identified the key components of a human research program, examined the primary responsibilities of administrators, and suggested strategies for creating, and then implementing, human subject protections. Taught by three highly experienced administrators and educators in the field, IRB Administrator 101 highlighted key administrator tasks including:

  • Advising principal investigators, research staff, IRB chair and members, and institutional officials
  • Managing protocol review
  • Recordkeeping and reporting
  • Handling allegations and complaints
  • Developing policies and procedures
  • Managing staff and infrastructural needs
  • Serving liaison functions
  • Providing/overseeing education
  • Conducting quality improvement or assurance reviews
  • Coordinating "off-site" administrative agreements
